Teach Rural Cambodian Children English: TRCCE

Cambodia is one of the developing countries in Asia Pacific region. Due to civil war, communist, and dictatorship regimes Cambodia going through from the 1970s to the 1980s, the gap between the rich and the poor is getting wider in the current Cambodian society. As such, most of Cambodia children, who are living in rural areas, are struggling with their day-to-day poor living conditions and have less access to quality education.

Currently, Cambodian students, who are able to speak and write English, have more opportunities to find jobs to earn their living, and the English language skill is usually offered by private education institutions, which are mostly available only in big cities, such as Phnom Penh City and other big provinces, which are very costly to the rural Cambodian children from poor families who are barely able to support their day to day living condition.

For this reason, we are Cambodian (Khmer) overseas communities would like to take a mission by bringing English teaching to rural areas so that children from rural, poor families could afford to attend and acquire this English language skill in hope that they are one day able to support their families themselves in a future to come.

Our goal is to be able to teach rural Cambodian children English as many as possible by starting one TRCCE class at a time.

Our first pilot project started teaching 2 classes on July 15, 2014 in Kong Chey village, located in Prek Koy commune, Kang Meas district, Kampong Cham province, Cambodia.

English learning skill is offered free of charge: 1 hour per day, 6 days per week, from Monday to Saturday.

The fee for a Cambodian English teacher to teach a class about 50 students and plus (1-hour a day per class, six days per week) is $50 per month. Thus, $100 per month is for 2 classes, and $1200 is for a calendar year.

As of the beginning of 2016, we are running 5 classes in 3 different villages:

1. Kong Chey village: 2 classes.

2. Prek Koy village: 2 classes.

3. O-Svay village: 1 class.

The experience is amazing. That is the enrollment is overwhelming because now we have an average of around 50 students per class. The demand is still very high, but we do not have enough funding for it. There are more villages near by that they want this similar program to run and operate in their villages, but we do not have enough funding to support them.
